Many say that Gunpla is the most enjoyable when you pick a kit that meshes with your skill level. Thankfully, it is very easy to find the perfect model because there are technicalities when it comes to Gunpla categorization.

Bandai, the company behing the Gunpla world, categorizes model kits in two ways – by grade and by scale.

So what is a grade? A kit’s grade refers to the level of mastery you will need in order to complete your Gundam, as well as the accuracy of the individual parts. For example, a Gundam that is a very detailed grade will be most “true to life,” or most similar to the way it looks within the show. Although, it is important to keep in mind that these model kits are going to be the trickiest to assemble. 

Understanding Different Grades

Some of the most common grades and scales you will encounter go as follows:

Super Deformed [SD]

These kits are made to look like tiny, cutified robots. They have the fewest parts and the smallest stature amongst all kits.

Super Deformed EX Standard

Super Deformed EX Standard model kits launched in 2015 and have more pose-ability and slightly more realistic proportions compared to the common SD. Typically, a Super Deformed EX Standard’s accessories are large enough to use interchangeably with High Grade models.

Super Deformed Cross Silhouette

Released in 2018, this line of SD kits features an inner frame technology, similar to a Real Grade. That said, these kits can be built on one of two proportions of inner frame – an 8.5cm “SD” frame (one that is similar to the classic SD line), or a taller 9.5cm “CS” frame.

High Grade [HG]

The next step above Super Deformed kits are the High Grade model kits. These models are not too complex and make great Gundams for beginners!

Real Grade [RG]

This grade launched in 2010, and includes an internal skeleton underneath its plate-like top parts. This inner frame within makes the Gundam more pose-able; paired alongside the 1:144 scale, this kit is definitely more intricate than its lower counterparts.

Master Grade [MG]

Launching in 1995, these model kits are also detailed, but without being excessively expensive. Although the end result is appealing for a beginner, it is recommended to have completed a few other models before undertaking a Master Grade.

Perfect Grade [PG]

These Gundams are even more accurate (and even more expensive) than the rest! They are the largest, most detailed models of all.

Working Around Scaling

Gunpla kits generally come in several scales, based on how the model would measure up to an actual Gundam. Like anything, there are always several exceptions that come along with the hobby; however, the most common scales you’ll see in the world of Gunpla are:

1/144

This is considered the smallest scale available, but keep in mind, just because it is the smallest size does not mean it is always the least detailed! 

Real Grade and High Grade models are available in this scale.

1/100

After 1/144 scale comes 1/100. These kits are slightly bigger than 1/144.

Master Grade models are available in this scale.

1/60

As previously stated, size doesn’t always correlate with complexity! Some models that are 1/60 scale can be very simple as well.

1/48

This scale of models are commonly known as “Mega Sized” models. They are large and are only available in a select few available kits!

1/12

Models of this scale are typically used for display at hobby shops.

1/1

You can’t make this one! You’ll have to see it in Japan yourself!

Nonscale

Any model kits that aren’t scaled in relation to the specifications from the show apply to this category. For example, SD Gunpla usually fit into this section.
